چکیده

Does desire for an outcome inflate optimism? Previous experiments have produced mixed results regarding the desirability bias, with the bulk of supportive findings coming from one paradigm—the classic marked-card paradigm in which people make discrete predictions about desirable or undesirable cards being drawn from decks. We introduce a biased-guessing account for the effects from this paradigm, which posits that people are often realistic in their likelihood assessments, but when making a subjectively arbitrary prediction (a guess), they will tend to guess in a desired direction. In order to establish the validity of the biased-guessing account and to distinguish it from other accounts, we conducted five experiments that tested the desirability bias within the paradigm and novel extensions of it. In addition to supporting the biased-guessing account, the findings illustrate the critical role of moderators (e.g., type of outcome, type of forecast) for fully understanding and predicting desirability biases Authors: Andrew R. Confidently Biased: Comparisons with Anchors Bias Estimates and Increase Confidence

Across a wide variety of situations, exposure to anchors has been shown to bias people’s estimates. What is not known, however, is whether externally provided anchors influence the confidence that people have in their estimates. Our studies had two goals. First, we tested whether exposure to anchors influenced people’s subjective confidence levels (Studies 1 and 2). These studies revealed that ...

Exploring the relationship between knowledge and anchoring effects: is the type of knowledge important?

Exploring the relationship between knowledge and anchoring effects: is the type of knowledge important?. 1 ABSTRACT Numeric estimates are influenced by a variety of factors including a person's knowledge and the presence of numeric anchors. In general, greater knowledge leads to more accurate estimates and the presence of anchors decreases accuracy. This dissertation is focused on the relations...

Anchoring in Numeric Judgments of Visual Stimuli

This article investigates effects of anchoring in age estimation and estimation of quantities, two tasks which to different extents are based on visual stimuli. The results are compared to anchoring in answers to classic general knowledge questions that rely on semantic knowledge. Cognitive load was manipulated to explore possible differences between domains. Effects of source credibility, mani...

Stumbling Around in the Dark: Lessons from Everyday Mathematics

The growing use of the internet for collaboration, and of numeric and symbolic software to perform calculations it is impossible to do by hand, not only augment the capabilities of mathematicians, but also afford new ways of observing what they do. In this essay we look at four case studies to see what we can learn about the everyday practice of mathematics: the polymath experiments for the col...
